“Meditation does not involve trying to change thinking by thinking some more. By watching your thoughts without being drawn into them, you can learn something profoundly liberating about thinking itself, which may help you to be less of a prisoner of those thought patterns - often so strong in us - which are narrow, inaccurate, self-involved, habitual to the point of being imprisoning, and also just plain wrong.”
Jon Kabat-Zinn.

FAQS

About Rinzai Zen and Zenways

Picture

Rinzai Zen is a style of traditional meditation. The tradition extends back 2500 years with its roots in Buddhist monastic practice. Many of these ancient techniques and practices have been influential in the development of the mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) programmes which have become widely recognised and researched in healthcare settings in recent years.
In the UK, the Rinzai Zen tradition is being disseminated by Julian Daizan Skinner, creator and founder of Zenways and the first Englishman to achieve the status of Zen Master in the Rinzai Zen tradition. Zenways promotes and encourages activities and practices that enhance human wellbeing, balance and awakening in the many different situations we find ourselves in.

About certification
Zenways is recognised by the College of Mindful Clinicians for its role in developing and delivering meditation programmes and retreats. Zenways also approves certification and provides supervision to its teachers.”
RUSSELL RAZZAQUE, DEAN OF COLLEGE OF MINDFUL CLINICIANS
About evidence
Zenways are of the strong belief that scientific validation of these ancient practices will increase even further their credibility in the modern world. As such they are currently participating in a research project, entitled “The Influence of Mindfulness and Meditation on Overall Life Satisfaction”, in collaboration with academic colleagues at Oxford University, under the Departments of Materials and Experimental Psychology. Ethics approval MSD/IDREC/C1/2012/79.

What if I can't attend all the sessions?
It is often the case that we can't attend all eight consecutive Sunday lessons. If you need to miss a class I supply notes covering the content of the lesson plus a link to a video of the lesson. It is important however that you don't stop daily meditation sessions so that you remain "in step" with the group and maintain your momentum.
